Convicted killer still at St. Louis jail, not at a prison
ST. LOUIS (AP) – A convicted killer is still at a St. Louis jail, not a prison, almost seven years after he fatally stabbed his grandmother.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the case of Calvin Brown shows how the wheels of justice can slow down when dealing with defendants who may have a mental illness.
Multiple judges, attorneys and medical experts say Brown was uncooperative with them in working on his case. A doctor hired by the defense to determine if Brown was fit to stand trial said in 2010 that Brown refused to talk to him twice. A Missouri Department of Mental Health worker says Brown refused to discuss his case with him.
Brown ultimately was found competent to stand trial in 2013 and was found guilty. He’s being held at the St. Louis City Justice Center while he awaits sentencing in August.
