SUNSET HILLS, MO (KTVI) – Residents in Sunset Hills, still troubled by the disappearance of one of their neighbors last week, are now deeply disturbed by the murder of an 86-year-old widow found shot to death in her bedroom.
Terry Tobey lived alone in a large home on Bradford Woods Drive, just off West Watson Road. Neighbors say she had difficulty hearing and was very forgetful, but also very nice, though very private. They don't even know if she had children. If she had enemies, it would be news to them.
At around 5:00 pm Sunday, a woman who checked on Tobey from time to time came to the house concerned because she was unable to reach her by phone. Enlisting the help of Tobey's next door neighbors, a retired physician and his wife who is a nurse, the three went into the house through the back door, which was unlocked.
They found Tobey's body lying on her bed with a red stain on the sheet. They also found her dog, Reggie, alive, but locked in her car in the garage. Other than the dog being found in the car, the neighbors say they saw nothing else in house out of place.
Sunset Hills police called in the Major Case Squad, which has 20 detectives working the case. Police say Tobey was last seen at about 9:30 A.M. Thursday.
While detectives are saying very little about this case, they have said there is no reason to believe this situation is related to the case of Linda McLaughlin, who is also from Sunset Hills, who went missing last week.
"We are very sorry. This is heartbreaking that this happened to her because she was so sweet and she was alone and old," said neighbor Jane Kairuz. "I can't imagine anybody trying to take advantage of her."
