ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – The summer sun is baking the St. Louis region, and some people can’t escape the heat.

Firefighters battling a blaze at an apartment in Hazelwood dealt with extreme heat Wednesday.

They took frequent breaks and drank a lot of water to stay safe during their efforts.

No lives were lost during the fire, but firefighters and evacuees likely lost a few pounds because of the heat.

It’s something volunteers at the Greater St. Mark Church Education Center in Ferguson can understand.

They are preparing for this year’s summer program.

Kids can spend the summer at the center learning, but all of the air conditioning units at the center were stolen.

The church can’t afford to buy new units, so the students will have to deal with the heat.

The church is accepting donations. For more information you can contact the church at 314-388-1180.
