St. Louis celebrates SCOTUS gay marriage ruling as Pridefest begins

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)Jubilation outside the U.S. Supreme Court Friday as the justices rule same sex marriage is legal in all 50 states. The five-to-four decision was written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, often a swing vote on the court.

Gay marriage was already legal in 36 states. Now, the remaining 14, including Missouri, must stop enforcing bans on gay marriage and begin issuing marriage licenses. In the Rose Garden Friday, President Obama credited those who have patiently, but vocally, pressed for change.

The Supreme Court decision is being greeted with great celebration at a big celebration in downtown St. Louis. Pridefest 2015 began Friday evening in downtown St. Louis.

Pridefest organizers were hoping a favorable Supreme Court decision and they got what they wanted in both the ruling and the timing.
