KIRKWOOD, MO (KTVI) – Flooding is causing baseball blues across the St. Louis area.

The losses keep mounting for youth baseball organizations.

The rain keeps coming.

The Hillsboro Little League has now canceled the rest of its season.

The Kirkwood Athletic Association was set to resume games for the first time since June 19.

A Monday afternoon downpour rained out all games.

Things are much worse in Hillsboro, Missouri.

6 of the 8 fields are destroyed.

The infields are washed out.

The back stops and fences bent over even pulled out of the ground by flash flooding from the nearby Belews Creek last week.

The water rose and receded in a matter of hours.

A heavy shipping container used for storage washed away, traveling about 50 yards before stopping.

A wall of heavy construction blocks was toppled.

“We were supposed to hold some all-star tournaments.  People come from all over the state – Joplin and over in Kansas City area.  They were supposed to play tournaments here,” said Paul Grebken, a long-time coach in Hillsboro. “Probably 100 games gone.  We were going to have a home run derby on that field; hand out trophies.  That’s done… I’m hoping that maybe be a fence company will want some publicity and say, ‘hey we’ll put it all back together for you’.”

Flood insurance covers the main buildings but not the ball fields.  The water did not reach the buildings.

Kirkwood was ready for play after 3-6 feet, perhaps more in spots, covered the fields.

Monday’s downpour changed that.

“We’ve got bases on the field.  We’ve got mounds out.  The only thing we had to do at that point is line the field.  That rain came, like I said, just enough to mess us up for the night,” said Eric Eickmeyer of the Kirkwood Athletic Association.

Weather permitting; there will be baseball in Kirkwood Tuesday.
