Martinez Shuts Down Pirates, Cardinals Win 4-1

Carlos Martinez pitched seven and a third shutout innings and led the Cardinals to a 4-1 win over the Pirates Thursday night in Pittsburgh, PA.

Martinez won his tenth game of the season, striking out eight Pirates. He also induced key double plays in the first and fourth innings. The Cardinals scored all of their runs in the fifth inning. Matt Carpenter delivered a two run single. Yadier Molina did the same thing a few batters later, upping the Redbirds lead to 4-0.

The win give the Cardinals a five and a half game lead over the Pirates in the NL Central divsion race.
