ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – A tragic story unfolding in north St. Louis as three-year-old boy is critically hurt after he shoots himself in his own home on Walton just south of Page.

The shooting happened Tuesday about 9:15 a.m.

Captain Michael Sack with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department says the young boy shot himself in the forehead after he was able to get his hands on a semi-automatic handgun.

Sack tells us there were adults in the home at the time but nobody was in the room with the boy when he shot himself.

It’s still unclear exactly who was in the house when this took place but police initially told us the boy`s mother was there with two other adults.

Sack says the boy is in critical and unstable condition but death is not imminent.

Sack tells us it appears the shooting is an accident but there are substantial concerns about how the child was able to get access to a gun.

Judy Simpson, a neighbor, calls the boy a wonderful child and says the family is responsible. She was stunned by what happened.

Police brought out two adult men from the home in handcuffs.

Sack tells us both men are relatives of the boy and were in the home when the shooting happened.

Sack says the next 72 hours will be critical to whether the boy is able to pull through.

People in the neighborhood are praying for him.
