Shots fired at police during search for Caseyville bank robber

CASEYVILLE, IL (KTVI) - The FBI and the Illinois State Police are leading an investigation into a series of crimes in the Metro East. It began with a carjacking in Caseyville.

Collinsville police chased the suspect and he fired shots at them.

At about 3pm a white male displaying a silver/chrome handgun demanded cash from employees at the UMB Bank in Collinsville. There were nine employees and two customers inside at the time. He made his get away in a car taken during a carjacking in Caseyville .

"Afterwards Collinsville police officers located the car. A pursuit occurred. Several units throughout the area were chasing the suspect because it was a bank robbery, a serious robbery. During that pursuit the suspect was firing several shots at the pursuing units." said Commander Derek Wise of the Illinois State Police.

A bullet struck one Collinsville police car but the two officers inside were not injured.

Officers from multiple departments responded searching neighborhoods near the Frank Holten State Park and wooded areas.

"He abandoned the vehicle in the area of 79th and State Street and ran into the wood line. Officers that were on scene were chasing him on foot." said Commander Derek Wise

The man wound up in woods near a residential area off Lake Boulevard in Centreville. According to Commander Wise the suspected bank robber shot himself and died of the self inflicted gunshot.

We're told no one else was injured during this crime spree. THe investigation is continuing and at this hour the name of the deceased suspect has not been released.
