ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – One man is marching after a 9-year-old girl was gunned down in her own bedroom in Ferguson. Jamyla Bolden was fatally shot Tuesday night while doing homework on her mother’s bed. At least one person posted a picture to Facebook of Shawn Williams. The images show him holding a sign that says, “Stand up for Jamyla Bolden.” They say he is a stranger who wants police to find the killer.
The motive for the shooting isn’t clear and so far there have been no arrests. The girl’s 34-year-old mother suffered a gunshot wound to her leg. She was treated at an area hospital.
Over 200 demonstrators took to the streets of north St. Louis on Wednesday. They were marching to protest the death of 18-year-old Mansur Ball-Bey. Police say he pointed a gun at them before they opened fire. Tear gas was used to disperse demonstrators and made nine arrests Wednesday night.
Pictures of the man walking the streets of west St. Louis began circulating on Facebook Thursday. Kimmy Brooks posted this viral image. The caption under the photo reads:
This man is Shawn Williams. He is standing alone, walking around at the intersection of Page and Union. He wants justice for Jamyla. Many of us do.
Yet he stands alone.
He says, “it didn’t happen here, but we all travel around. Somebody knows something. I’m gonna be here.”
I went down to give this man a hug and buy him lunch. He refused, but asked that I give the $7 cash I had on me to someone homeless that needs it more than he. I handed him the money and said, “when you see someone in need, give this to them.”
I got my hug. And a renewed faith in the community that is this city. As I sit here and write this, I hear his voice, I hear horns honking in support.
Make this viral. Send it to the newspapers and local TV news. This man is standing up for a good cause. Don’t let him stand alone.
Shawn Williams is a good man.
A candlelight vigil is planned for Jamyla Bolden on Thursday night at 7pm. You can find out more information about it here.
