ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – This weekend marks the soft opening for the new IKEA store in Midtown. It’s not a public event, just a private friends and family event. The grand opening is Wednesday, September 30, and people will be allowed to start lining up on Monday.

But how will the city and nearby businesses handle the traffic?

Many of course are welcoming the increased traffic from Forest Park Avenue and Vandeventer, especially the bars and restaurants in the nearby Grove neighborhood. But Laclede Cab, which has its parking lot entrance on Vandeventer just across from the IKEA, worries what effect all the traffic will have on its drivers’ ability to get in and out of the lot.

The St. Louis City Traffic Division has made plans for the last several months on handling the thousands of cars expected to be added to the traffic pattern.

On opening, the city will close southbound Vandeventer from Forest Park Avenue to the IKEA entrance from 7:30 a.m. Wednesday until traffic is under control. Police will also be on hand to help direct shoppers and commuters.
