UPDATE: The Cardinals say scans of Piscotty came back negative, but he’s going to be held overnight for observation.

PITTSBURGH (KTVI)- St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty was taken off the field at PNC Park in Pittsburgh Monday night, following a collision in the outfield.

In the seventh inning, Piscotty and Peter Bourjos were both tracking a fly ball off the bat of Josh Harrison in deep left-center field.  Bourjos caught the ball, but not without his lower body slamming into Piscotty’s head.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny rushed out on the field with the team’s training staff as Piscotty was on the ground. He was immobilized and taken off the field to a rousing ovation from the Pittsburgh crowd.

The team says Piscotty, who has emerged as an important cog in the Cardinals’ run toward a playoff berth while filling in for injuries to Randal Grichuk and Matt Holliday, suffered a head contusion and was being taken to a local hospital for treatment.
