EAST ST. LOUIS (KTVI) - Students in East St. Louis will be back in class on Monday after approval of a deal to end the teachers strike. On Friday afternoon, teachers in the East St. Louis voted to approve the new contract with the East St. Louis District 189 school district.  The agreement was then approved by the East St. Louis School District Board of Education and Financial Oversight Panel.

Classes will resume on Monday, November 2, 2015. The District will make-up the 21 school days missed during the strike. Teachers went on strike on October 1.

The deal came together after a marathon bargaining session between the teachers union and district officials. That session started at noon Thursday and lasted until 1:45am Friday.

The new contract provides  an average salary increase of $12,834 over the life of the contract, improved insurance benefits, and a 19-step salary schedule for teachers.
