CHICAGO (AP) – An Illinois mother who served five years in prison for watching her three children drown after her boyfriend drove a car into a lake is fighting for custody of three more children.

Amanda Hamm was convicted of child endangerment in the 2003 deaths. Her boyfriend was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Now remarried, Amanda Ware has three more children. They were removed by child protection authorities last year after a doctor recognized her as the former Hamm.

Defense attorneys for Amanda and Leo Ware say they haven’t hurt their children.

Prosecutors say courts don’t have to wait until children are harmed before intervening if there’s a history if parental abuse. A judge on Friday will decide whether to return the children.
