GRANITE CITY, IL (KTVI) – The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office charged a 20-year-old St. Louis man in connection with a series of car burglaries along Route 3, which ultimately led to a police chase and the man’s arrest after running into the Mississippi River in a desperate attempt at escape.

According to Detective Lt. Mike Nordstrom, the Granite City Police Department had received reports of vehicle burglaries at several businesses along Route 3: American Steele, Ernhardt Tools, Dynamic Transit and Chestnut Health System. An officer located the suspect vehicle—a 1991 black Jeep Cherokee—traveling south on Route 3 near W. 20th Street. The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the person behind the wheel attempted to flee toward the McKinley Bridge.

Just before reaching the bridge, however, the suspect pulled the vehicle over, got out, and ran towards the river. Police saw the man in the water and notified the Coast Guard. The suspect swam back to the riverbank and was taken into custody before the Coast Guard could deploy.

The suspect, identified as Daytrail Brown, was charged with five counts of burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, and aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude police.

Brown remains in custody at the Granite City Police Department pending extradition to Madison County Jail in Edwardsville. His bail was set at $750,000.
