ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – Tony Cruz is heading west for the holidays as the Cardinals traded the back-up catcher to the Kansas City Royals for minor league shortstop Jose Martinez.

Cruz, 29, batted just .204 with 11 RBIs and an on-base percentage of .235 during the 2015 season.

Cruz became expendable after the Cardinals recently signed another back-up catcher, Brayan Peña, to a two-year contract. Peña, who played with the Cincinnati Reds in the 2015 season, batted .273 with a .334 on-base percentage.
