EAST ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – While we've yet to fully see what Old Man Winter has in store, now is the time to start getting ready.

IDOT is prepared for the winter season and asking us to do the same. Their preparation campaign titled "Winter Weather: Get It Together" is focused on preparing and reminding the traveling public do their part in ensuring that this winter driving season is a safe one.

IDOT District 8 covers 11 counties in the bi-state area. The district has 60,000 tons of salt on hand for this winter season. For some perspective, they used 40,000 tons last year. Leftover salt from a previous year can be used the following.

Motorists are reminded to:

  • Reduce speeds and account for longer commute times during icy and snowy conditions.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel during inclement weather
  • Put the cellphones down. In the state of Illinois, the use of handheld devices is illegal.

Over the next few days, IDOT plans to take advantage of the milder weather that's heading our way. Crews will be able to take advantage of that fact that several asphalt plants are still open so those crews will be patching up failed areas or potholes on local roadways throughout the metro area Thursday and Friday.
