CLAYTON, MO (KTVI) - The trial of Sunset Hills Mayor Mark Furrer on assault and property damage charges begins Tuesday in Clayton. Lawyers picked the jury Monday. Furrer is accused of striking and injuring a cyclist with his Mercedes Benz convertible in July 2014 after yelling "get off my road."
The confrontation happened at Old Gravois and Weber Hill Road. The cyclist, Randy Murdick, and several witnesses said the mayor struck the bike.
However Furrer denies the accusation. He says Murdick ran a stop sign and he would never hit a cyclist with his car in "a million years.”
Lawyers from the two sides interviewed about 50 St. Louis County residents before selecting a jury. One of the prosecutors asked if anyone had become annoyed while driving behind slow riding cyclists. One man said he lives in Wildwood where cyclists are "everywhere." He added "they are a nuisance sometimes, just like deer." But he insisted he could be fair if he were chosen as a juror for the case. The trial is expected to be completed by Thursday.
