Man charged with gun possession in death of teenager caught stealing from a car

ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – A St. Louis man charged with shooting and killing a teenager he caught breaking into his car is now facing charges.  Not for killing the teen, but for being a felon in possession of a weapon.

60-year-old Lervurance McDade shot and killed 13-year-old Martinez Smith-Payne last month when the boy and his cousin were rummaging through his car.

Our partners at the Post-Dispatch report McDade is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

He pleaded guilty to illegal possession and unlawful use of a weapon in 1989.

In 2013 McDade was sentenced in St. Louis County to 5 years’ probation on a felony charge Involving un-paid child support.

McDade’s bond was set at $30,000.
