ALTON, Ill. (AP) - An 11-year-old boy is dead after being shot at a housing complex in Alton.

Police were dispatched to the apartment complex when the shooting occurred around 5:15 p.m. Monday.

Madison County Sheriff's Department Maj. Jeff Connor says the boy was shot in the parking lot area of the recreation center in the middle of the housing complex. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police believe the bullet came from a passing car. Connor says someone fired several rounds toward several people near the recreation center.

Connor says he's unsure if the boy lived in the complex.
