CARTHAGE, Mo. (AP) _ Authorities say a southwest Missouri man apparently killed his two children and then killed himself.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department says in a release that Tony Kernel shot his 9-year-old son, Wesley, and 7-year-old daughter, Timber, before also fatally shooting himself.

The department says no one else was at the family’s home late Friday when the shootings occurred. Deputies were called to the scene Saturday after a neighbor went to the house because Kernel did not show up for work.

Sheriff Randee Kaiser told The Joplin Globe (http://bit.ly/1PjFlxd ) it’s unclear what may have prompted the apparent double murder.
