St. Louis trying blue salt to keep roads clear

ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – With the first winter storm of the year hitting the St. Louis area, the St. Louis Streets Department is trying something new to melt snow and ice.

Blue salt, a new chemical called Iceband.  It has magnesium chloride in it that increases the effectiveness of the salt to negative 10 to negative 15 degrees.

The city is testing the after the snow storm two years ago that dumped 8 to 10 inches of snow over the area, along cold that kept the salt from working.

Some 40 city snowplow trucks are loaded up with the new blue salt, ready to tackle a storm that will stretch into the early morning hours Wednesday.
