Terri Schiavo’s husband calls Jeb Bush’s ad featuring late wife “disgusting, exploitative”

Terri Schiavo’s husband is calling a television ad by the super PAC backing  Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush disgusting and exploitative, according to BuzzFeed News.

“Using his disgraceful intervention in our family’s private trauma to advance his political career shows that he has learned nothing.”

Michael Shiavo’s late wife suffered severe brain-damage and was at the center of a decade’s long legal and political battle to remove her life support. She was in a vegetative state for nearly 14-years.

In the Right to Rise ad, a brief image of Schiavo appears while a narrator describes Bush as “a man of deep faith, who fought time and again for the right to life.”

“He’s proud of the fact that he used the machinery of government to keep a person alive through extraordinary artificial means — contrary to the orders of the court that were based on the courts determination, made over 6 years of litigation, that doing so would be against her wishes.”

Schiavo told BuzzFeed News that it’s simply disgusting that Bush and his super PAC would exploit his wife’s tragedy for what he calls his “crude, political gain.”

For years Michael battled Terri’s parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, who believed there was hope for their daughter.

During his term as Florida governor, Bush got involved in the case  to try to keep Terri alive.

In 2003, the Florida legislature passed Terri’s Law, which allowed him to order that Terri Schiavo continue to receive life support. In 2004, it was later ruled unconstitutional and violated a right to privacy. This resulted to Terri’s removal from life support.

According to CNN, Bush was disappointed in the ruling at that time.

“In my heart I believe we did what was right, but I’m respectful of the Supreme Court’s decision.

Michael Schiavo believes his wife’s case shows how Bush would govern if elected.

 “What the campaign video shows is that if he ever got his hands on the power of government again, he would do the same thing again, maybe next time to your family.”

The ad runs on television stations in South Carolina.
