WOODBURN, IL (KTVI) - A family in Woodburn, Illinois awakened by a nightmare they're still living with today. Ruth and Wayne Adams were in bed early New Year’s Day 2015 when they heard a struggle. Their 34-year-old son, Cody, was wrestling with a masked intruder carrying a gun.

“And then I got that person up against the refrigerator and I said, 'What are you doing? What’s going on here, what are you doing?'” Wayne said.

The intruder had shot Cody.

Ruth chased after the individual, but the masked attacker got away. Meanwhile, Cody died in his father’s arms.

“I had to tell her he was gone,” Wayne said. “It’s tough to watch your child die.”

“He murdered my son, but he killed us. He killed us that night,” Ruth said. “And you get all confused, you don't know. You've never been in a situation like this. We couldn’t find the phone; we didn't know what to do. And all you hear is your son gurgling and gurgling. And then he's dead. He's gone."

Ruth couldn’t get a clear description of the suspect, but she managed to rip the suspect’s ski mask off his head. It features a skull design with the eyes cut out. Macoupin County Sheriff Shawn Kahl said he hopes it’s a clue that can lead to an arrest.

“This kind of thing doesn’t happen down there,” Kahl said. “People are very scared at this point in time. I don’t believe it was random. I think he was targeted.”

CrimeStoppers is offering a $10,000 reward to find the killer.
