BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI) – Illinois American Water issued a boil order for customers in three metro east cities Thursday evening following a water main break Thursday night.

According to the water company, a 24-inch transmission main broke in the Dutch Hollow neighborhood of Belleville, causing a spike in water pressure.

Customers in Belleville, Swansea, and Shiloh should bring their water to a rolling boil for five full minutes before using that water for drinking or cooking. The water is okay for bathing, washing, and other common uses.

Boil orders are issued when water pressure drops below 20 pounds per square inch in any part of a community’s distribution system, Illinois American Water said. Boil orders are typically left in effect for 36 to 48 hours.
