ST. ANN, MO (KTVI) - Many schools provide breakfast and lunch for students during the week. During the weekends many children from low income families may not get many meals. Dorsett Village Church in Maryland Heights is filling the need by filling backpacks with food for students every week.

Our camera was rolling when church volunteers were surprised with our "Pay It Forward" award as they made a delivery to Drummond Elementary School in St. Ann.

"On behalf of Fox 2 and First Bank we'd like to give you $500 for your backpack ministry to pay it forward, to thank you for all the things you do for our students here at Drummond." said FOX 2's Dan Gray.

"Aww, thank you, that`s really sweet. You`re welcome." said Jane Litteken of the Dorsett Village Church.

Teacher Laura Witte nominated the Dorsett Village Church for the award. She says about 70 students are helped by the backpack ministry every week.

"Well, I've seen the great things they have done for our students. Every year they try to do even more students. The backpack program just helps out our students a lot." said Laura Witte.

Backpacks are given out every Friday. They are filled with five meals and snacks to get children through the weekend.

Congratulations to Dorsett Village Church. "Pay It Forward" is brought to you by First Bank. Click here if you would like to nominate a deserving person for the award.
