ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - A major winter storm is unfolding Wednesday with blizzard like conditions due the heavy snow and strong winds.  The gusts could reach up near 40 mph through the afternoon.

Now that the storm has organized, I have a better feel for that all important sharp gradient on the western edge. This is critical because it is marked by an intense band of heavy snow.

Ballwin and Chesterfield are getting dumped on by heavy snow while O'Fallon, MO is in lighter snow. There are not much more than flurries in Lake STL.

A 5-10 mile wide band of supercharged snowfall from central Macoupin County IL swept into St. Louis County and northwest Jefferson County. The band is so skinny that it was hard to include it in the snowfall map.

The band is dropping 4-7" os snow on the area. It should cover most of St. Louis County and all of St. Louis City and points east and south.
