ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – The St. Louis Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged a 33-year-old woman in connection with the death of a Bellefontaine Neighbors police officer.

Sgt. Peggy Vassallo was driving to work on the morning of August 24, 2015 when she was involved in a minor accident near the intersection of Highway 67 and Old Jamestown Road. When Vassallo got out to check on the other driver, she was struck by a third vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

Vassallo was rushed to the hospital and died a few hours later. She was the first officer from Bellefontaine Neighbors to die in the line of duty since the community was founded 66 years ago.

Investigators identified the driver of that third vehicle as Latonia Waites. Prosecutors charged Waites with one count of second-degree involuntary manslaughter.

Waites is not yet in police custody, prosecutors said.
