EAST ST. LOUIS, IL (KTVI) – The Illinois Department of Transportation is expecting extensive morning rush hour delays approaching the Poplar Street Bridge after Monday’s early commute.

IDOT is adding a new ramp off the Martin Luther King Bridge to westbound I-55/64. They’ll have to close one lane—between Third Street and Tudor Avenue—through November while the work is taking place.

With the new ramp coming off the eastbound MLK Bridge, drivers will be able to either go back to St. Louis on the Poplar Street Bridge or take Route 3 going south.

The work was originally scheduled to start last August, but was postponed because the MLK Bridge was completely closed for maintenance and traffic was already an issue.

This project means only two lanes will be open to westbound I-55/64 drivers in this area for the next year. That could mean big jams.

Officials are encouraging drivers to use alternate routes, like the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.
