DELLWOOD, MO (KTVI) – The police chase of a suspected carjacker ended with two, head-on crashes on Chambers at West Florissant, at the Ferguson/Dellwood city limits, around 2:00 Wednesday afternoon.

Two people were hospitalized and a suspect was under arrest, police said.

The crash scene shut down one side of Chambers, with people driving by wondering what happened.

It started with a carjacking in St. Louis, Sunday, police said.

A witness told FOX 2 the crashes happened right in front of him.

“If I had been 5 minutes earlier, it would have been me.  I saw the dust when it came from it,” the witness said, asking not to be identified. “Police were everywhere, unmarked cars, coming from everywhere.  Everybody was jumping out…I just saw unmarked police cars, coming from everywhere, everywhere.”

The SUV, a silver, 2007 Pontiac Torrent was taken in a robbery Sunday on Labadie in North St. Louis, police said.

The driver turned from West Florissant into oncoming traffic on Chambers, witnesses said.

“They hit (my girlfriend’) car and another car, then jumped out and ran,” said the boyfriend of one of the crash victims.

He also asked not to be identified.

She was following him to drop his car off at an auto shop.  He got through the intersection and didn’t see what happened to her.

“I was in front of her!”  He said.  “I was in front of her but I didn’t even know what happened until she called me.  She was like, ‘somebody just hit my car’.  I was like, ‘where, when?’ …  she was walking but then they grabbed her.  I don’t know if she fainted or whatever.  They put her in an ambulance…these guys, they’re out here bad.  It just keeps getting worse and worse… it’s ridiculous.”

The stolen SUV was spotted today by police air support; officers on the ground tried to stop it but the driver took off, police said.

No one was seriously hurt.
