ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)- Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill is trying to figure out how to make college more affordable and more accessible for students.

The senator met with administrators from colleges and universities at Metro High School in Midtown. The meeting kicked off her College Affordability Tour.

McCaskill says the cost of college and student debt is a crisis. In fact, one study shows the average Missouri student graduates with nearly $26,000 in debt.

McCaskill is backing a bill designed to help people with student loan debt. The legislation would allow people to refinance high-interest federal loans to lower rates.

The bill would also help those with high-interest private student loans.
