MADISON COUNTY, IL (KTVI) - Fire raced through a single story frame home near Granite City Monday morning taking the life of a middle aged woman. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire was concentrated in the front half of a home in the 1600 block of Courtney Boulevard just off Route 203. A woman who neighbors said is in her 80's managed to get out, but her friend, about 55-years old, did not.

Two volunteer fire departments responded at about 8 am to this wood frame home just north of the Granite City line. Fifteen firefighters fought the blaze, but were unable to save a woman trapped inside. Her dog also died.

The Illinois fire marshal began the investigation as soon as fire crews cleared the scene. It is not considered a suspicious fire at this time.

"At first I thought it was my house on fire. Then I seen next door that the house next door was on fire. Well, the after effects of it." said neighbor Jamie aldridge.

"One person actually did attempt to go inside and make a rescue. He was a family member. Sustained some minor burns on his hands, but was unsuccessful in his attempt." said Chief Terry Kreher of the Long Lake Fire Dept.

This case is still under investigation by the Illinois Fire Marshal`s Office.
