ST. LOUIS (KTVI) - St. Louis is remembering the Hall of Famer and home town legend Joe Garagiola.
Garagiola grew up on The Hill in South St. Louis.
He would often return here to these humble beginnings in the 5400 block of Elizabeth on The Hill. And tonight hearts are breaking learning that Joe Garagiola has died at the age of 90.
Many people know Garagiola first as a catcher for the Cardinals in the 1946 World Series team.
But he was probably best known for his skills off the field as a broadcasting icon for 58-years.
No matter how much fame he saw, he'd always come back home to The Hill to sit in the pews he prayed in as a child at St. Ambrose Church and visit.
He was a regular at Cunnetto’s where he was welcomed on a first name basis.
They say Garagiola had a love affair with the City of St. Louis, his neighbors on The Hill and that love was reciprocated.
