BOURBONNAIS, IL – A man was taken into custody Monday afternoon after a report of an active shooter at a Target store in Bourbonnais, Illinois. The reports were unfounded.
Michael Merichko, 39, was charged with disorderly conduct.
Police said Merichko “caused a disturbance” inside the Chicago-area Target around 1 p.m. Police said Merichko was “protesting Target Corporation’s alleged policy on transgender bathrooms.” The company’s policy allows “transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.”
An initial 911 call to police reported an active shooter inside the store. Upon arrival, police confronted Merichko outside the store and he was taken into custody without incident.
“At the time, there is no indication of any shots fired and no weapon has been recovered,” police said in a statement. “Investigators have determined that Merichko made no threats of shooting anyone in the store. We are still looking into how the call came out as an active shooter.”
