Fairmount Park opens for horse racing season

COLLINSVILLE, IL (KTVI) – Tuesday was opening day and the ponies were running.  The stands were full as patrons betted on their favorite horse.

The park opened just days before this Saturday’s Kentucky Derby which will be on May 7th.

It`s the 91st season for the legendary race track and in celebration of Kentucky Derby week, the park had eight live thorough-bred races to launch the season and welcome fans. Organizers say the crowd was at capacity.

Live racing days started today and will last through September 5th. The track will be open on Tuesday’s at 1 pm and Saturdays at 7:30pm.  Then after June 10th they will add Friday nights until the end of the season.

There will be 7 to 10 horses per race per night.
