State police identify man killed in Sullivan
SULLIVAN, MO (KTVI) – Investigators have identified the man shot to death by a Missouri state trooper after a traffic stop turned violent.
According to Sgt. Cody Fulkerson with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred along an outer road of Interstate 44 in Sullivan just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday. A state trooper had pulled over a red pickup truck on a routine traffic stop. The driver sped off while the trooper was talking with him.
Following a brief pursuit, the pickup driver got out of his vehicle and tried to run away on foot. The state trooper continued to chase after the man. The suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and the trooper fired one shot in defense, striking the suspect.
The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Joseph Weatherby of Sullivan, was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
Fulkerson said Weatherby was wanted for probation violation in St. Louis County and driving on a revoked license in Crawford County. He had prior convictions for second-degree assault, tampering with a vehicle, and resisting arrest.
