NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – The holiday weekend ends with a man shot to death in a grocery store parking lot in North St. Louis County.

Shoppers are stunned by what happened in the grocery store shopping lot located at Schnucks on Bellefontaine Road at Interstate 270. The shooting happened at 12:45 pm Monday afternoon when two men who apparently knew each other got into an argument in the parking lot.


The probable cause statement says the victim, Wesley Hughes, tried to buy marijuana from Jamal Clay. Clay agreed to sell the marijuana to the victim. The victim took the marijuana and then refused to pay. Police say Clay pulled out a handgun and demanded the victim return the drugs and a scuffle ensued. During the scuffle, the defendant shot and killed the victim.

The victim was rushed to the hospital but died after he arrived.  Police have suspect Clay, 22, in custody.

People who shop and live near the are angry that it happened at such a public place on a busy afternoon.

The victim was identified as Wesley Hughes, 24 years of age, who resided in the 3800 block of Nebraska, St. Louis, MO 63118.
