Today is Memorial Day, the day in which a grateful nation honors the men and women who died while serving our country.

First known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the American Civil War and became an official holiday in 1971.

One of the biggest Memorial Day ceremonies in the state takes place at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

The ceremony begins at 10 a.m., but bus and tram transportation with be provided starting at 8 a.m.

Visitors can park in the Sheridan Road metro station lot or the Jefferson Barracks VA Medical Center lot to catch the shuttle.

Due to heavy traffic, visitors are encouraged to use the Koch Road exit from I-255 and park at the VA park the shuttle lots; everything is pretty well marked.

The City of St. Peters is also holding its annual Memorial Day remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. at the city’s veterans memorial, located next to St. Peters City Hall.

And there are similar ceremonies this morning as well: at Fenton City Park at 10 a.m., at the Veterans Memorial Walk in O'Fallon, Missouri at 11 a.m., and at the St. Charles County Courthouse at 1 p.m.
