KIRKWOOD, Mo. (AP) _ A memorial service is planned for next month for former Missouri appellate judge and Republican lawmaker Robert O. Snyder.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch ( ) reports Snyder was 98 when he died Wednesday of heart failure at his home in the St. Louis suburb of Kirkwood, Missouri.

The Navy veteran of World War II served six terms in the Missouri Legislature in the 1960s and 1970s, serving as Republican House minority leader from 1973 to 1976. He narrowly lost his second bid for Congress in 1976.

Snyder was appointed to the state’s court of appeals in 1977 and retired in 1987 at age 70, which is required of Missouri judges by state law.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. June 18 at First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood.
