ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Donald Trump took his first steps toward lining up political donors during a meeting with top Republican fund raisers Thursday. A Combination of self funding and free media gave the outsider candidate all he needed to secure the party's nomination.

Trump won the presidential primary in Missouri. He has not won the enthusiastic support of traditional Republican donors and office holders in the "Show Me" state.

Donald Trump Started his fundraising campaign on the east coast meeting in New York City with power house Republicans Thursday. This comes on the heels of a difficult week for the candidate. His continued criticism of a federal judge of Mexican heritage prompted Illinois Republican U.S. Senator Mark Kirk to pull his endorsement.

Lindenwood political science professor Joe Cernik thinks many Republicans will put their money in state wide races instead of Trump's campaign.

"They are going to sit it out. I really don`t anticipate that they are going to step in. I think what a lot of let`s say more traditional Republicans are thinking is if he loses badly, he tarnishes their image for years to come and they are trying to figure out how to bring it back." said Lindenwood University professor of political science Joe Cernik.

Until recently, the top Missouri GOP fundraisers were aligned with Jeb Bush or Ted Cruz. Cernik thinks some donors will support the so-called 'dark' money campaigns. those are the ones that will finance ads attacking Hillary Clinton without mentioning Trump.

Donald Trump's unconventional campaign could lead to some unconventional donors and fund-raising efforts. In the meantime, watch more GOP dollars go to state races. Particularly the Missouri Republican primary for Governor, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt's re-election effort and the congressional races.
