BALLWIN, MO (KTVI) - There was a  happy ending in the search for two swimmers along the Meramec River Tuesday night.  Friends say the two, said to be in their late teens, set off from Sherman Beach to swim to Castlewood State Park.

It's a 2-mile swim and teens had no life vests or flotation devices.

When they didn't arrive, their friends called for help and the Metro West Fire District began a search by land and in the river.

The teens eventually showed up at the park.

When they realized the swim was too dangerous, they got out of the water and walked the rest of the way.

Officials say it's a good reminder to always wear life vests in the Meramec. The currents can be strong and treacherous, even for experienced swimmers.
