ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – While the City of St. Louis spent their day checking on the elderly around town, there was one group of hundreds at city hall for a special ceremony.

On Thursday, the U.S. Navy held an event outside of city hall to recognize 48 new recruits headed boot camp in Chicago. The weather didn’t stop the group from taking their pledge and their families from standing by.

The 48 recruits will also be recognized at Thursdays Cardinal's game

Meanwhile, workers at the city were going door-to-door to make sure residents on their weather emergency check list were ok.

City officials say there are at least 35 cooling centers in the region for those who need help, along with organizations like Cool Down St. Louis. The cooling centers will be open until the heat advisory expires on Sunday.
