Man accused of mass shooting at church attacked by jail inmate

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC – Authorities say the man accused of a mass shooting at a South Carolina church was attacked inside of a jail shower. According to officials, an inmate assaulted Dylann Roof while he was in the shower at the Charleston County Jail Thursday.

Roof is awaiting trial after police say he opened fired inside Mother Emanuel AME Church, killing nine churchgoers.

According to the incident report, another inmate started hitting him in the face and body while Roof Was in the shower. A detention officer broke up the altercation.

Roof has bruising on his face and back. He was in protective custody at the time of the attack. No weapons were involved.

It’s unclear how the other inmate gained access to the jail’s protective unit. An internal investigation is underway.
