Cardinals starting pitcher Carlos Martinez didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning and the offense put up eight runs. It all added up to an 8-2 Cardinals win over the Astros on Wednesday afternoon in Houston. Martinez threw just 79 pitches in seven innings of work. He struck out seven while allowing just one run on three hits. The victory gives Martinez an 11-7 won lost mark for the year.

Offensively, Brandon Moss knocked out his 22nd home run of the season, a three run blast. Jeremy Hazelbaker added a solo homer, his ninth of the year.

The win keeps the Cardinals in that second Wild Card spot, one game ahead of the Pirates and two ahead of the Marlins. They trail the NL Wild Card leaders, the Giants by just two games.
