FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) - Family and friends of 27-year-old Michael Ellis are remembering the man with a big personality and an even bigger drive to play basketball.

Dozens came together Saturday night at Dade Park for a candlelight vigil, including Ellis' mom Carla Smith.

"I'm just lost right now" Smith said.  "He's been through a lot of tragedies and he didn't suffer for anything" Smith said.

Ellis was killed Friday afternoon when his car was hit by an SUV at the intersection of Carson and Harvey in Ferguson.  Police say the SUV that killed Ellis was stolen out of St. Louis County and occupied by four men and one woman- all who ran away from the scene.

"I guess God said it was time to come home" said Smith.   "It was time for him to go. But he didn't mean for him to go like that.... so soon like that" she said.

No one is in custody.  If you have information that can help in the investigation, call police.
