STATE PARK PLACE, IL (KTVI) – Three suspects are in custody after a police chase and crash involving the Velda City police chief.

Velda City Police Chief Dan Paulino said the chase began around 9:30 a.m. when he tried to pull over a silver Nissan Versa for speeding on Lucas and Hunt. Instead of stopping, the car sped off and he started chasing it.

Paulino said someone inside the car threw something out the window; it's unclear what that was.

At some point during the chase, another Velda City police car joined in and authorities found out the car they were chasing was stolen.

The chase went into Illinois, where a crash happened involving Chief Paulino on Route 111 just off 55/70 near Fairmont City.

Paulino said he hit a passenger vehicle while chasing the suspects inside the stolen Versa. Paulino said the driver of the passenger car stopped on Route 111 as the stolen car sped by, but then the driver started to pull out onto 111 and the chief hit the car.

Both Paulino's SUV and the other car sustained damage. Fortunately, neither the chief nor the driver of the car he hit was hurt. The car that the chief hit was not involved in the chase.

The three suspects later abandoned the stolen car on Black Lane just south of 55/70 in the State Park Place area.

Police found all three suspects hiding behind sheds off Black Lane.
