Deveontay Bell was charged Aug. 28, 2016, with murder in the beating death of his son, who was within a week of his first birthday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) _ A St. Louis man is charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of his son.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 22-year-old Deveontay Bell also was charged Sunday with felony child abuse resulting in death. He is jailed on $500,000 cash-only bond.

Police were called to Bell's home Friday. The infant was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Charges say an autopsy revealed liver laceration and tears to other organs. The medical examiner ruled the injuries were consistent with being struck in the abdomen.

The child has been identified as Devontay Bell.  His 1st birthday would have been Tuesday.
