ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – A 5-year-old remains hospitalized after being shot over the weekend by another child, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said.

According to our partners at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the boy was shot around 7 a.m. Saturday at a home in the 2800 block of Stoddard Street in the Jeff-Vanderlou neighborhood.

The boy’s mother and her boyfriend initially told police the child was playing outside when they heard a gunshot and then found him injured. However, investigators determined the boy was shot inside the home, possibly by a 4-year-old.

The gun had not been properly secured, police said.

Child services are investigating the incident and the mother and boyfriend could face child endangerment charges.

The child’s name has not been released. It is unclear if the 4-year-old is related to the 5-year-old.
