COLLINSVILLE, IL (KTVI) – A Collinsville high school student is hospitalized in St. Louis with severe injuries suffered Monday in a fall from a staircase at the high school. Superintendent Bob Green said the boy fell over a banister from the second floor.  Two students were nearby and raced for help from teachers. The teen was airlifted by ARCH helicopter from the school's football field.

Collinsville Police Chief Steve Evans said "We have no reason to believe this was anything other than an accident.”Superintendent Green agreed, adding "I know it wasn't a fight and it doesn't appear to be any bullying and we respond pretty quickly to that.”

The school district asked the police department to conduct the investigation when it became clear the student had severe injuries.

The accident happened as some 500 of the nearly 2000 students at the school were heading to their lunch period.

Tuesday Facebook and social media postings shared numerous prayers and offers of help to the student's family. Tina Kleeb wrote, "Prayers for peace and healing for this young man and his entire family.”

School counselors and social workers with crisis training were on hand at the high school Tuesday to help students and staff deal with their emotions. Green said they would be available as long as needed.

Statement from the Collinsville Police Department:

"We still have no reason to believe this was anything other than an accident.  We continue to work with the school in the investigation.  Out of respect for the family of the injured student, we will not be commenting at this time."

Statement from the Collinsville School District:

The following is an important announcement from the Collinsville School District: At approximately 12:30 today, a student was seriously injured on the stairs at Collinsville High School.
