ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – Viewers in Franklin County report hearing something that sounded like a loud explosion Thursday at around 4pm. Police say they actually heard a sonic boom from a military aircraft.  The noise was also heard outside Franklin County.  Several other viewers report hearing it as far away as Mexico, MO.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s office says in a Facebook post, “In reference to the loud “Boom!” heard across the county. At this time our initial investigation is advising it was a “sonic boom” caused by a military plane. We will update if it is found that there another reason.”

It is not clear what military aircraft caused the boom or why it was in the area.  Police are checking with the FAA and Fort Leonard Wood for details about this incident.
