O’FALLON, MO (KTVI) – Friday morning in St. Charles County it was a sweet treat with the guys who patrol the beat.

“I knew there was ‘Kona with a Cop’ but I didn’t really know much about it,” said Sophia Hoersch, a seventh-grader at St. Paul School.

The St. Charles County Police Department was serving up smiles and trying to break the ice over some shaved ice.

“Traditionally, we do the coffee with a cop and we do a lot of local businesses,” said St. Charles County Chief of Police Dave Todd. “But this year we thought we’d do something different and reach out to all of our citizens. So we decided to do Kona with a cop. It’s a snow cone manufacturer and we came to one of our local schools to meet with some of the other people we serve and see what they think of how we’re doing the job.”

Todd said the officers’ jobs are to build relationships with children.

“So when they grow up they realize these officers are just like mom and dad,” he said.

For the 178 pre-K through eighth grade students at St. Paul School in O’Fallon, Missouri, this was a chance to show their support.

“It’s important for you to let them know how grateful you are for them putting their lives on the line for you,” said fifth-grader Cole Schoolfield.

“Call your local police or sheriff’s department and I guarantee they’ll reach out and come meet with you,” Chief Todd said. “Because we’re looking forward to it too. We work for you.”
